Swamp Cooler Down, Furnace Up — The Aurora Two-System Fall Plan
A lot of Aurora homes run both systems: evaporative cooling through the dry summer, a gas furnace through winter, often sharing the same ductwork. That means fall is not one task, it is a handoff — and the two halves fail in completely different ways if it is handled late.
The two systems, side by side
The cooler's job in fall
Get the water out before the first freeze.
- Supply line bled and drained
- Pan drained, pump pulled
- Scale and debris cleared
- Unit covered, register sealed
Fails as: a split line leaking into your ceiling at the thaw.
The furnace's job in fall
Prove it heats — before you need it.
- Filter and airflow verified
- Burners and flame sensor cleaned
- Heat exchanger inspected
- Flue, gas pressure and ignition tested
Fails as: no heat on the first freezing night, at emergency pricing.
Why the timing is so tight in Aurora
Front Range freezes typically arrive overnight somewhere between late September and mid-October, often with only a day or two of warning. Heat demand follows within days. That gives Aurora homeowners a narrow window where both are still low-stress, low-cost jobs.
| Window | Cooler | Furnace |
|---|---|---|
| September – mid October (now) | Ideal — open schedule, no rush | Ideal — ahead of the first cold snap |
| First freeze week | Urgent — damage depends on whether the line held water | Calls start stacking the day it gets cold |
| Late November – February | Too late to prevent damage | Emergency pricing, no schedule control |
Why do it in one visit
- $100 off the combined price — $200 instead of $300.
- One technician, both systems. If the shared ductwork or the register has a problem, it gets caught once.
- One appointment block instead of two half-days of waiting.
- The register seal and furnace airflow are related. A leaking cooler register is an open hole to the roof that you pay to heat all winter; sealing it in the same visit is the cheapest efficiency fix in the house.
The order we recommend
- Cooler shutdown first — this is the one with a hard weather deadline.
- Register sealed and cover fitted — while the cooler side is already open.
- Furnace service second — same visit, full heat cycle run to confirm the system is winter-ready.
- Spring start-up scheduled — most customers book it now so May takes care of itself.
Both systems, one visit: $200
Cooler shutdown $150 + furnace service $150 = $200 when booked together.

Do I stop using the cooler completely after shutdown?
Yes. Once the water line is drained and the power is off, the cooler is done for the season. Warm-season comfort moves entirely to the furnace.
What about that one 80-degree day in November?
It happens, and the answer is to open a window rather than re-charge a drained cooler. Restarting is a spring job, not a November one.
Do both systems share ductwork?
In many Aurora homes, yes — which is another reason to have one technician look at both while the system is open.
Should I book the spring start-up now?
Most of our customers do. It is the simplest way to stop thinking about the cooler entirely.
